I make a range of garden furniture that is based on the American Adirondack design, but I have made mine a lot nicer, not so chunky.
These are made in Oak, which will go a silver grey colour in time, as all GOOD furniture does, finished with Danish Oil, these will last for generations, all metal fixings (screws) are actually inbedded in the wood and not exposed to the air.
Unlike most of the "hardwood" furniture available these days, you will not have to buy them a second or third time because they have rotted.
Other hardwoods and a few softwoods can be used which will be cheaper but I will give no gaurentees as to how long they will last.
Oak is still the best.
I have shown this at a number of fairs over the last few years, many people have sat in the chair and only one person has not liked it because she could not get out of it, one person gave me a selling quote when she said that the chair "Gives you a hug when you sit in it" I can say no more, I have never sat in a more comfortable chair, the two wide arms means that you COULD fit either a pint on each arm or a glass on one and the bottle on the other, but I would not suggest this idea if you have the rocker!!

This is a rather special chair I call The Dolphin, sorry about the poor picture, this stands nearly five feet tall, quite stunning.
